Welcome
Welcome to the Department of Mechanical Engineering at UC Riverside. I want to extend a special welcome to the Class of 2012!! Our department is home to 15 full-time faculty members, about 400 undergraduate and 60 graduate students.
Education
We offer excellent educational opportunities to students seeking a challenging environment to pursue research in the broad discipline of Mechanical Engineering leading to M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. Our faculty members have an outstanding track record in mentoring undergraduate students in their research laboratories.
Our curriculum leading to a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering is unique in engaging our students with our faculty through all fours years of study. Commencing with an introduction to mechanical engineering freshman course, students learn the fundamentals of modern engineering computing tools (Solidworks, Matlab, Labview, etc.), gain hands on experience in measurement science, apply basic principles of solid mechanics, materials science, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer in laboratories, and utilize modern engineering design principles and tools to complete a capstone design project in the senior year. Our curriculum emphasizes practice of professional ethics, an understanding of the relevance of engineering in contemporary life, engineering economics, and the impact of engineering and technology on society in the broadest sense.
Our graduates pursue careers at companies including Raytheon, Thermal Structures Inc., Goodrich, 3M, Liquidmetal Technologies, Toro, Control Components Inc., Northrop Grumman, Guidant, etc. Several of our graduates pursue graduate study in our own department, and at other graduate programs around the nation.
Our
Ph.D. graduates have found positions both in academia (post doc and faculty),
government research facilities, and in high-tech companies.
Research
Research activities within the department span seven broad areas. They include energy processing, bio-applications, nano and microscale engineering, computation and design, materials properties and processing, multiphase flow and combustion, and air quality and fire engineering. Faculty directed research is sponsored by federal agencies (NSF, NIH, DOE, ARO, AFOSR, USDAFS, ONR, etc.), state agencies (Cal Trans, CIEE, UCTC, etc.), and industrial sponsors (Raytheon, Aeptec, Lockheed, Bourns Inc., etc.). Extramural grants received in 2008 to date exceed $1.2 million.
Faculty Honors
Several of our faculty members serve on editorial boards, and as editors and associate editors for prestigious journals in their field. Other faculty honors include one Fellow of TMS, one ASM Fellow, one ASME Fellow, one AAAS Fellow, two AIAA Associate Fellows, one ASLMS Fellow, one ARO YIP Award, one AFOSR YIP Award, two NSF CAREER awards, and one NIH K01 award recipient
